V Try U Buy : Waffles (Part 1)

Both of us find it considerably difficult to relate to anyone who won’t get excited at the idea of waffles! They are irresistible and have won the hearts of so many, though not a conventional item. We were thoroughly enthralled by the prospect of going looking for waffles – but it turned out to be one of those rounds that are easily dampened at the onset. Clearly the non-availability of waffles at Cocoon Café and The Commons failed to live up to our enthusiasm. Both being coffee shops, and specially being nonchalantly informed of its non-availability at The Commons was, frankly enough, flatly disappointing.

The Barnesbury won so many “cool points!” Their crab soufflé waffle was an indulgence that made the round truly worthwhile. They also deserve due mention for their much upgraded and friendly service, since it used to be notorious for substandard service.  Do check out our ratings, and tell us where you’ve had the best waffle. One thing we agreed on was that we’re getting our own waffle-making machines and trying out recipes – they’re too good to stay away from, after all!

We will be doing a second round next week because we couldn’t include some of our other personal favourites this time.

Crab Soufflé Waffle - The Barnesbury (No.91, Barnes Place, Colombo 07)

Price - Rs.475+ service charge and taxes
Value for money - High
Taste - *****
Variety - There’s a Creamy Chicken Bacon Waffle (Rs.450), Chicken Hawaiian Waffle (Rs.425) and a Cheese and Tomato Waffle (Rs.425).
Overall - The best thing about this waffle was the creamy crab filling which was mildly spicy, delicious, and comforting. A definite must have.

Hell’s Chicken Waffle - BARS Café (No.24, Deal Place, Colombo 03)

Price - Rs.540
Value for money - Average
Taste - ***
Variety - BARS serves a variety of sweet and savoury waffles.
Overall - The waffle wasn’t properly done, and the topping was extremely average. The chicken however, was done quite nicely but we weren’t too crazy about this waffle.

Vegetarian Waffle - Coco Veranda (No.32, Ward Place, Colombo 07)

Price - Rs.720
Value for money - Average
Taste - ****
Variety - A chicken waffle is also available and is priced the same.
Overall - A deliciously comforting waffle. Served piping hot, it was covered under gooey, stringy mozzarella cheese along with sliced onions, tomatoes, bell peppers and sliced black olives. Very good, and we’d come back again to try the chicken waffle. Also included a side of fries.
