It comes as a great reprieve to be able to do a round of a healthy food items every now and then, there’s no explaining how much it rids the affair of the guilt factor. We went looking for the best quiche in town, and it turned out to provide rather satisfactory results.

The Barefoot Café’s broccoli and mushroom quiche is so good it can wipe out any previous dislike one may have felt for broccoli! The Fab and Sponge were good too, except for the appallingly smaller portions. Invariably we decided Barefoot’s quiche is for a meal and the other two perhaps for a snack. We were told that The English Cake Company does superb quiche but when we visited the outlet down Suleiman Terrace at around 2pm, they were all over. So we just might do a second round of quiche sometime soon and we will be sure to include TECC too.

The verdict is pretty straightforward – Barefoot has got the best, though we are not sure, yet again, how reasonably it is priced.

Broccoli and Mushroom Quiche - The Barefoot Café (8th Lane, off Galle Road, Colombo 03)

Price - Rs.900++
Value for money - average
Taste - *****
Variety - Quiche Lorraine (contains bacon), and an asparagus quiche, both of which are priced the same at Rs.900++.
Overall - Despite being an extremely busy day at the café with people walking in every two minutes, we were quite pleased with their prompt, and rather helpful service by the staff. Moving on to the quiche, we were taken aback by the gooey layer of stringy cheese covering the top layer of the quiche, and digging our forks into the open pastry, we discovered the broccoli and mushroom to be nice, warm and incredibly tasty. The base and crust was soft and buttery in taste. The quiche served is actually a huge wedge and is accompanied by a light salad drizzled with lemon mustard dressing.

Crispy Chicken Quiche - The Fab (474, Galle Road, Colombo 03)

Price - Rs.70
Value for money - low
Taste - **
Variety - None
Overall - A terrible pastry, which we found to be extremely dry despite it being well-flavoured and peppery. Plus using chicken bacon is a terrible substitute.

Spinach Quiche - Sponge (347, Galle Road, Colombo 03)

Price - Rs.98
Value for money - average
Taste - ***
Variety - Asparagus quiche (Rs.100).
Overall - The pastry was really good, and the filling too. It’s just that it was such a measly slice so we’re not too sure we’d go back for this pastry.
