V Try-U Buy: Ice Cream Sundaes

Few can say no to ice cream, and I am not one of them! Quite delighted to be on a hunt for the perfect ice cream, I found myself disappointed fast enough though!

You probably buy ice cream off the supermarket shelves and get it for dessert at restaurants: the landmarks on our quest route this time were ice cream parlours in town. Carnival and Il Gelato served great ones, more on the rating below.

Baskin-Robbins, “Where the World gets its Ice Cream From” was such a turn-off!! From portion sizes to service, the Duplication Road branch was such a let-down. Brace yourselves – we found a strand of hair in the bowl of Crazy Caramel sundae we ordered there!!! Upon notifying them we were offered a free, fresh portion of the same, which we weren’t too ready to try and therefore turned down. We just hope it doesn’t become one of those international franchises who take their customer base in a country like ours for granted, and serve sub-standard items.

A spanking new favourite of many, Rio works great if you’re looking for a quick scoop or two on the get-go, and is downright affordable.

The rating here is specific to the sundae we tried out, if you have another favourite from the same place drop us a comment. If you know people who make yummy, home-made, healthy options, let us know what twists on the flavor you better enjoy.

You perhaps have your own recipe! I, for one, know that melting vanilla ice cream, adding diced Mars/Snickers and re-freezing it makes a quick delicious tub of ice cream.

Check out our ratings, and tell us what you think.

Coppa San Marco

Il Gelato

Duplication Road, Colombo 4
Taste  * * *
Price Rs. 660
Value for money Average
Variety in choice Average
Chill tip The meringue in our sundae would have been better if it was spread crushed. Might want to try eating it that way next time may be. Apparently the Odel outlet allows you to try out flavours before you order, and kids seem to love it.

CRAZY CARAMEL

Baskin-Robbins

Duplication Road,
Colombo 4

Taste  * *
Price Rs. 400
Value for money Low
Variety in choice Average
Chill tip The 31 flavours they boast of basically gives you a scoop of a flavor either in a cup or cone. For such a fun-sounding range, portion sizes are a let-down and may not really be worthwhile.

RIO SPECIAL

Rio

Marine Drive,  Wellawatte

Taste  * *
Price Rs. 100
Value for money High
Variety in choice Average
Chill tip The coconut ice cream in the Rio Special turned around the entire bowl amazingly. See if you can order a bowl of the coconut flavor alone. If you’re not a fruit fan tell them you’d skip the fruits (which they add to nearly all orders) in your bowl. Same applies for jelly

AMBROSIA

Carnival

Galle Road,

Kollupitiya
Taste  * * * *
Price Rs. 295
Value for money High
Variety in choice High
Chill tip There was cake in the Ambrosia that we ordered. A unique idea, Carnival pulled it off really well. This sundae had the basic chocolate and vanilla scoops but the treacle they added gave a very new taste. On the whole they offer great value for money. Drop in if you haven’t before!

Our Pick : Carnival

If the restaurant has a chain of outlets, the rating here is specific to the mentioned outlet. V Try – U Buy is not a connoisseur’s report, but is designed for the common man’s benefit.
