views 3271Danishes are simply delightful and not everyone can get them right. Setting out to do a fruit/sweet-based pastry review this week, we found ourselves trying Danishes at three out of four places. Croissants were out of the question since they can be reviewed separately altogether, being a popular item.
You will find all four places given high rates this week. On what was a very gratifying round, we found every establishment to turn out heavenly Danishes and Delifrance does a good job with the Sultana Croissant (much like Danish despite the name). We found perfect custards to work the magic at every place and turn around the pastries.
Having a sweet-based pastry, is largely different to a savoury we learnt, because sweeter ones are far more moist and doesn’t make the pastry feel a tad bit flaky. Check out the ratings for more.
If you like the idea of Danishes, do try out any place below, since we can safely say they are all good! In the meantime, add any suggestions you may have to try Danishes so we can all try out!
Fruit Danish Goodies, Cinnamon Lakeside (No.115, Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 02) |
|
Taste | * * * * * |
Price | Rs.190 |
Value for money | High |
Variety | Goodies also serves Tutti Frutti Danish, Cherry Twist Danish and a Peach and Custard Danish, all of which are priced at Rs.190. |
Overall | Slices of glazed kiwi, a few grapes, prune and a peach wedge are carefully placed atop a layer of soft, creamy custard spread on the pastry. The sweet custard combined with the tartness of the fruit proved to be a delicious mouthful. The danish fills you up rather fast, probably because of the custard. We found this rather affordable, and we must note that the other varieties of Danish looked promising. |
Sultana Croissant Delifrance, Odel (No.05, Alexandra Place, Colombo 07) |
|
Taste | * * * * |
Price | Rs.220 + service charge and taxes |
Value for money | Average |
Variety | Available on the shelf were Apple Turnover (Rs.270), Confectioner’s Custard Roll (Rs.200), Butter Almond Triangle (Rs.270), Maple Pecan Plait (Rs.300) and a Bear’s Paw (available in a custard and a chocolate, both varieties priced at Rs.270 each) |
Overall | The Sultana Croissant is a soft, round pastry with raisins embedded in each circle, and a halved cherry in the centre. The pastry had been stuffed with a minimal amount of custard but nonetheless, it was delicious and comforting - perfect for a quick snack or even as an addition to your breakfast. |
Blueberry Danish BreadTalk (No.33, Park Street, Colombo 02) |
|

Price | Rs.190 |
Value for money | High |
Variety | None |
Overall | This Danish is rather large, and filled with soft, subtly sweet custard with glazed whole blueberries on top. Not being the biggest fans of BreadTalk, we found this pastry to be surprisingly delicious and definitely worth the money spent. It doesn’t cut back on the necessary ingredients and it was filling. |
Peach Danish Pitstop Hilton Colombo Residence (No.200, Union Place, Colombo 02) |
|
Taste | * * * * |
Price | Rs.140 |
Value for money | High |
Variety | Pitstop serves a Grape Danish, Mango Danish and Strawberry Danish, all of which are priced at Rs.140. |
Overall | Again, another underrated fruit Danish that we came across. Delicious, comforting and very good. We would definitely come back to Pitstop to try the other varieties. Two custard-smeared thumbs up. |
