We have wanted to go on a froyo hunt for a while now, and this week proved to be lucky! We included the newly opened outlet, Swirl to the review in addition to Yo-Mo, Aviraté Café, Coffee Bean and Il Gelato.

If there’s anything to be highlighted from this quest, it would be the unusually large serving, named “medium size” that was served at the Aviraté Café! The blueberry flavour was neatly done too, and if a large portion sounds like your thing, then this comes highly recommended – even if they are not, you can share it or opt for the smaller one, but you need to check them out!

The plain froyo at Il Gelato had a distinct yoghurt flavour, which was refreshing. We couldn’t help ourselves being highly amused by the Il Gelato outlet at Odel allowing customers to add toppings of their choice to the froyo straight off the topping bar that had about 8 to 10 variants!!

Yo-Mo kept up to its usual good standards, and they turned around a very basic flavour we ordered into one of the best frozen yoghurts on the round. Read on find out more about the ratings and get in touch with us know what you think!

Classic Vanilla with Chocolate Sauce and Cereal - The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (No.2, Maitland Crescent, Colombo 07)

Price Rs.480
Value for money Average
Variety The coffee shop serves three other variants of frozen yoghurt, which are Classic Tart (regular Rs.350, large Rs.400), Affogato Yoghurt (regular Rs.500, large Rs.550) and Caramel Affogato (regular Rs.550, large Rs.600). Toppings include pineapple, cereal, oatmeal, peanut candy, black raisins, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, vanilla bean sauce, fruit cocktail and crushed chocolate cookies, which range in price from Rs.50-100.
Overall We were rather pleased with the quantity served in the regular sized cup, but we must point out that the chocolate sauce was poorly drizzled all over the dessert which was s shame because it was rich and indulgent and went very well with the subtle sweetness of the vanilla froyo.

Blueberry with Raisins and Crushed Waffle Cone Pieces - Aviraté Café (No.30, Maitland Crescent, Colombo 07)

Taste  * * * * *
Price Rs.450
Value for money High
Variety On the Tuesday we visited the café, they were serving plain and blueberry. The toppings consist of M&Ms, chocolate and coloured sprinkles, raisins and pieces of crushed waffle cones (which make a surprisingly nice addition to the dessert). A cone will cost you Rs.120, while the small sundae serving will cost Rs.280, medium at Rs.380 and large at Rs.480.
Overall A lovely blueberry flavour was present in this froyo, and combined with the generous serving of raisins and crushed waffle cone pieces, it easily became one of the two top picks. The crunchy pieces of waffle cone combined with the soft, creamy texture of the froyo was excellent. And the medium sized portion could well pass off as large so it was definitely value for money. two thumbs up for neat presentation too.

Cookies and Cream Sundae in Waffle Cup - Swirl Frozen Yoghurt (No.33, Isipathana Mawatha, Colombo 05)

Taste  * * *
Price Rs.210
Value for money High
Variety Swirl serves a regular cone (Rs.50), waffle cone (Rs.80), small cup (Rs.80), regular cup (Rs.150) and waffle cup (Rs.150). Flavours consist of original, mango, strawberry and a blueberry and pomegranate with toppings such as Ritzbury Pebbles, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate chips, chocolate chip cookies, cashew nuts, cereal and almond flakes to choose from. Liquid toppings include chocolate, strawberry and caramel sauces. The different sundaes vary in price from Rs.110-270.
Overall The sundae was presented nicely and you get a relatively large sundae for Rs.210. If it weren’t for the chemically enhanced taste in the froyo and sour caramel sauce, we wouldn’t have been so disappointed but we would definitely go back to try the individual flavours, which we hear is quite good.

Vanilla Sundae with Strawberry Topping - Yo-Mo (West Tower Ground Floor, World Trade Centre, Colombo 01)

Taste  * * * *
Price Rs.310
Value for money Average
Variety Yo-Mo serves plain, vanilla, strawberry and blueberry yoghurt with liquid toppings such as chocolate, caramel, strawberry, blueberry, mango, passion fruit and kiwi. Fruit toppings consist of fresh strawberries, pineapple rings, mango slices, peach slices and Maraschino cherries. Other toppings include almonds, crushed Oreo cookies, Fruit Loops, gummy bears, M&Ms, Smarties and roasted oats to name a few. A regular cup is priced at Rs.250, large cup at Rs.325 and a waffle cone at Rs.150.
Overall A deliciously soft and creamy froyo with a subtle vanilla flavour, and combined with the strawberry topping, we agreed that this was light and refreshing. Well worth a visit to the WTC.

Plain Froyo with Toppings - Il Gelato, Odel (No.5, Alexandra Place, Colombo 07)

Taste  * * * * *
Price Rs.250
Value for money High
Variety None. The toppings vary from chocolate, caramel and strawberry sauce to chocolate shavings to raisins, cherries, cereal and cashew nuts.
Overall A rather fun and exciting froyo experience. The froyo is served plain and customers can choose to adorn the sundae with any toppings of their choice at the individual toppings counter. The froyo was delicious with chocolate sauce and crushed waffle cone pieces. We thought it was worth the Rs.250 we spent, and definitely worth a second trip.

Our Picks: Aviraté Café and Il Gelato
