Let weight watchers frown upon it as unhealthy, and others scoff at some of the ‘dodgy’ places that sell it, there’s little damage that criticism can do the undying popularity of biryanis in a land like ours! An all time favourite hunger buster during office lunch hours or family dinners, we couldn’t help but get excited about doing a biryani round-up and letting you know of our recommendations.

 

Apart from being on a largely satisfactory quest around town, both of us would agree that to dine at some of these places (the ‘hotels’ to be specific) would go down as quite the experience. Though their approach and standards may differ to coffee shops, there was nothing to complain about the service – they were all friendly and cheerful. 

 

You may find biryanis on the menu of most restaurants that serve rice, but we made it a point to visit the places that had a lasting repute of having “THE” biryani. These hotels and joints, located all over Colombo are places topping anyone’s biryani recommendation list, and you’re sure to have tasted one of them – either you got it for yourself, or your friends/family got you on to the bandwagon during some meal. It is understandable though, that at first anyone may be vary of some of these places, but once you’ve tasted the food, your taste buds always thanked you! This is of course with the exception of Redberry’s which we tried out after a suggestion we had received. 

 

If there was one consideration at all during this city round, it would be that both of us girls have relatively average appetites and found ourselves taking away (though we did our round over a few days) what we couldn’t shove down at all the places – except one! The biryani at Hotel De Buhari was so good; we just had to have it all! This we thought says enough about its taste, more on the ratings below.
