The Style Files : The Velvet Revival

Velvet the refined vampire look, polished with a tad of decadence to it. Worn with simply styled hair, bold rings, dark stained lips, seductive beauty and an aura of 70's rebelliousness. In a season that has seen a revival of the best, and occasionally worst, of that decade’s (the 70’s) style, velvet is experiencing a fashion moment once again. This velvet look isn’t artsy, grand or princess like it’s just chic.

Velvet is having a moment right now. On the catwalk, Christopher Kane’s retro take on velvet came in a punchy, electric colour palette, slouchy black ones at Chloé while at Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci used ornate devoré to gothic effect in his Victorian-infused collection. Alber Elbaz dressed models head-to-toe in the ever so plush material at Lanvin, Emilio Pucci cut wide-leg trousers in velvet and Dries van Noten crafted unique accessories in the fabric. Shoes, dresses, tops, and bags are covered in the luxe-feeling textile. The thing about velvet is that it’s quite grown-up on the whole, and that’s something to be celebrated in a world full of emojis, slogan t’s and dungarees.

The imminent arrival of a month of parties is, of course, partly responsible for the fact that velvet is looking like a tempting proposition again - eminently tactile, it’s something of a no-brainer for a bit of fun on a festive night out.

There are plenty of  ways to wear velvet and look elegant. If the Bodycon dress doesn’t work for you  think more louche and loose. Long, flowing evening gowns that cocoon the body for a striking silhouette. A more relaxed silhouette will work best with longer lengths, although be warned: while a floor skimmer will certainly create a dramatic visual effect, it may be tempered somewhat if you end up stepping and tripping on the hem all night! Wrap dresses and deep necklines are flattering but always keep in mind if it's low on top don’t make it short as well as that will just look tacky!

Velvet is unquestionably the fabric of the season, very much part of the rich, festive, deluxe feeling for Christmas. The plainest versions are trouser suits, boyish and gamine. For this season velvet is cut-worked and devoré (burnt out). Dark, sumptuous prints on velvet, trimmed with silk cords and tassels inspired by  Morocco. Velvet prints into patchworks for long skirts and gorgeously boho gowns. So many ways to wear it so make sure you try!
