Swing into the Sixties

The unmistakable A-line of the swinging sixties are back on the runways through most of the Fall/Winter 2014-15 collections albeit with a modern twist. A sweet 60s vibe flooded the collections lots of mini and A line skirts, knee-high boots (not much use in Colombo!), psychedelic prints and accessories that have a touch of yesteryear. Think Jean Shrimpton and Jane Birkin when approaching fall’s most resounding trend. Block heels are mandatory.  Whatever the reason, be happy that the '60s are swinging back our way.

Boho Chic

The warmth of the Boho Chic look is  here, and it's time to disregard all your previous notions about bohemian chic styles. Think less hippie caftans and tunics, cropped fringe tops and Coachella-esque wear and more pairing bold, eclectic prints with classic silhouettes and giving structured pieces touches of exotic flair with feather, beaded and dangling embellishments. A look that conveys bohemian sensibilities, but doesn’t have to be restricted to just a vacation wardrobe.

Military RULES

In 1995 when designer Christophe Decarnin took the helm at legendary couture house Balmain, he sent out his first collection full of military -inspired fashion which was an important milestone in the fashion narrative. Fall/Winter 14’s  luxe military trend is one of my favourites, encompassing the incredibly flattering shades of khaki and gray. When it comes to adding an edge this season military is the way to go. Think cargo pants in sumptuous leather or silk, medallion buttons, buckles and belts provide important finishing touches. The key here is to remember that it's not all about camouflage. Rather, think of the feminine twist on the style.

Fairytale Fantasy

Fairytale imagery has always been a source of inspiration for fashion designers from Cinderella to Little Red Riding Hood to the evil witch in Snow White. It has always been a source of inspiration a "green light" for the creation of the most theatrical outfits. The Fall/Winter 2014-15 collections have their own touch of fairytale magic. At  Valentino, a spell was cast with ethereal details such as 3D embroidery and hooded capes.
