A long traffic filled ride in the rain to Thalawathugoda was well worth it when we were greeted by the ever-chirpy foodies, and sisters-in-law, Hashini and Tharanga Seneviratne. Their chirpy nature and love for all things delicious permeates through theirs scrumptious baked treats.
They are both self taught and pay careful attention to what they create thus making the outcome amazing. Hashini used to bake but took a break when her kids were born but upon being egged-on by Tharanga and her fans who missed her delicious treats, decided to re-launch on November 2 this year.

Food and value for money – 5 stars

From their mouth watering gooey Chocolate Cinnamon Rolls (Rs 1,500 for a batch of eight), which borders between a Danish pastry and a bun, to their simple and light Butter Cake with Cashews  (Rs 1,800 for 1.1kg) their goodies are soft, airy and just downright delicious.
They bake an amazing Chocolate Mud Cake (Rs 2,400 for eight pieces). Topped with strawberries and chocolate it is oozing with chocolate in every bight while also being so moist, dense and sinful. Their Black Brownies (Rs 2,500 for nine pieces) are light and dense at the same time, while the extra chocolate in it really hits the spot!

Among the less sinful yet equally delicious treats is the Apple Pie (Rs 2,400).  Hashini and Tharanga use eight apples in the pie so every slice has an apple in it! It is flavoured lightly with freshly ground cinnamon powder and not overly sweet in the least. The delicious buttery piecrust is made from scratch.

Tharanga has tweaked her mum’s recipe to create a heavy Date Cake (Rs 2,400 for 12 pieces). It is full of dates , nuts and I also found traces of other dried fruit in it. They are not stingy with the dates, as you can literally see and bite into them.

If you like crunchy Chocolate Chip Cookies (Rs 300 for a pack of three) they bake some pretty good ones. I am generally weary of crunchy ones as I much prefer gooey and slightly under-baked cookies but I must admit these were good. Ideal to nibble on with a cup of hot tea or coffee.

I am not a fan of Christmas Cake and the only Christmas Cake that generally works for me is baked by my mum using my great grandmother’s recipe. Their Authentic Christmas Cake (Rs 250 for a 100g pack) was certainly tasty in its own right, but isn’t what I am used to.

Important: Their goodies are freshly baked using only butter and with the minimal use of refined sugar. They also import a number of ingredients in order to maintain the highest of standards. A ‘Cake Tag’ is added to every box giving instructions on how to delve into the goodies. It would be best to give them at least two to three days notice for an order. You can catch them at the Good Market on Thursdays.
