Thush’s Podi Brownie Business Turns 1

It’s been a whole year since Thushanthi de Silva decided to start her very own brownie business after quitting her job in the corporate sector. What started as something totally random as creating a page on Facebook for the brownies she baked fresh everyday, it’s grown to become Colombo’s ONLY home-based baking venture dedicated solely to brownies.

Since starting Thush’s Podi Brownie Business, Thushanthi reveals that the journey has been good and rewarding, and she has grown in terms of discovering strengths she never knew she had, and also learning that running a business requires being personally responsible for each outcome, and how important it is to offer a good product and even better service along with it. She says that she owes her family a lot, especially with helping her out with the baking - anything from chopping up ingredients to mixing or even last minute shopping for an ingredient. “I am indebted to my family, and am eternally grateful for their love and assistance,” explains Thushanthi.

Last December was by far, the busiest month for TPBB, as orders kept coming in for Christmas and New Year events, and Thushanthi managed to pull through. A self-run venture, she wants to maintain the personal, home-run baking by herself because she feels it’s much nicer and personal as she gets to meet her customers and receive their feedback. “I’ve become really good at connecting with people and even though it’s kind of become a 24 hour job, it is so rewarding,” she expresses. What was unexpected however was how fast the business has grown, in the span of a single year, mostly through word-of-mouth and minimal advertising via the Facebook page.

To celebrate the first year at the TPBB, there will be a 25% discount on orders for June 28th and 29th - a thank you gesture for loyal customers. There will also be a brownie tasting session on the 29th (Sunday) from 9AM-3PM, and individual brownie pieces will be available for sale too. Recently, Thushanthi’s introduced coconut brownies to the menu which she says tastes slightly like Bounty chocolate. The TPBB menu is small and consists of the Original Podi Brownies, Nutty Brownies, Cookie Brownies, Blondies, Red Velvet Brownies, Podi Kick Brownies (contains alcohol), and brownies made with After Eight mints, Smarties, or even Oreo cookies. You can also get personalized brownie cakes done in addition to brownie kebabs which are ideal for small events or parties.

As for future plans for TPBB, Thushanthi says she would love to supply establishments with her brownies so it provides customers easier access to picking them up. So what are you waiting for? Go make an order to be picked up on the first anniversary of Thush’s Podi Brownie Business. Your brownie cravings will be satisfied!
