Following immense success at her stall at the Good Market, it was only a matter of time before Kiru Thavayogan, owner of Yumi Cake, finally opened her own café selling her delicious homemade treats, in addition to a larger range of goodies and a sugar-free range as well aptly named ‘The Guilt-Free Range’.

The cute store with its white and pink interiors match the Yumi Cake logo, and is warm, inviting, and very much resembles a candy store in a fairytale. The store sells all the favourites under the Yumi Cake brand, which includes Kiru’s famous chocolate cakes – Chocolate Suicide, a hefty chocolate cake comprising of several layers and sandwiched with a gooey chocolate frosting, the Heavenly Chocolate, a chocolate cake with regular chocolate frosting, Minty Mist, a chocolate and mint cake for those who love that combination, Ferrero Rocher cake, in addition to red velvet cake, carrot and walnut cake with cream cheese frosting, and a decadent blueberry cheesecake. The cakes are available for purchase by a single slice in addition to the whole cake.

A range of brownies also dominate the menu at the store, and customers can pick from the fudgy double chocolate brownies, fudgy Oreo brownies, fudgy brownies with cashew, fudgy cheesecake brownie, red velvet cheesecake brownie and the fudgy gluten-free brownies made with kurakkan and walnuts, off the Guilt Free range. Brownie packs are also available for takeaway. A select range of cupcakes are also available and these include the Ferrero Rocher cupcake, an Oreo surprise cupcake, a festive cupcake (vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting and topped with rainbow sprinkles), a sugar-free chocolate cupcake, from the Guilt Free range.

Kiru has also expanded the range to include freshly made salads, kurakkan buns (available in fish, prawn and potato), iced and hot tea and coffee beverages and a few desserts (sizzling brownie with hot chocolate sauce, a milk and white chocolate mousse with pieces of brownie in it, and the Nutella éclairs). She’s introducing homemade soft ice cream next week, consisting of two flavours to start the range which are a Nutella and hazelnut and a chocolate and mint, both of which will be served on cones and available for takeaway in a plastic cup. She also plans on introducing a range with barbequed chicken, specifically in sandwiches, or served alongside a healthy salad and freshly baked bread roll.

Using natural organic sweeteners for goodies under the Guilt Free range, Kiru says that the range has really picked up amongst customers who follow strict sugar-free diets. The store sells imported sugar-free chocolate bars and marshmallows in addition to flax seeds, organic energy bars and organic soy and almond milk cartons.

The Yumi Cake website will be launched soon, where orders can be made online for convenience of customers. The store is located at 40D, Glen Aber Place (Marine Drive), Colombo 03, and is open everyday from 8am – 11pm from Sunday to Thursday and 8am – 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday. Do check out Yumi Cake on Facebook.
