Taste, variety and value for money – 5 stars

One of the latest additions to the growing trend of home bakers is brother and sister duo of Nisha (27) and Achala (14) Seneviratne who are the brains behind  The Batter Factory. They make everything from scratch be it desserts, cakes, doughnuts or cookies.

One of the cutest aspects of their array of goodies are their Cake Pops (Rs 70 per Cake Pop while the prices vary on custom made creations). We also tried out their delicious Design Swiss Roll (Rs 1,250) which had polka dots on it while the centre was filled with fresh cream and apricots.

Coconut with cake or chocolate is really not something I go for but after having nibbled into their Coconut Cake (Rs 2,800 for 1.5kg) which had two layers sandwiched with fresh cream and coconut flakes I was impressed.

The Batter Factory also does delicious Red Velvet Cake (Rs 3,500). It is slightly dense but full of flavour and the cream cheese frosting is amazing. A slightly less decadent option is their simple Date Cake (Rs 1,500 for 1kg) while Achala and Nisha also create delicious Donuts (Rs 500 for 6). These come topped with a chocolate glaze, cinnamon sugar or lemon glaze.

The Batter Factory’s sinful Chocolate Brownies (Rs 120 per piece or Rs 3,000 for a cake) are a must try. They are gooey and full of chocolate and can send you into a chocolate coma.

Among their dessert options is their Cake in a Barrel (Rs 750) which has layers of cake and frosting. It is soft, light and not overly sweet, just like their other cakes and would be ideal to serve at a dinner party.

About The Batter Factory

Nisha and Achala are self-taught bakers with a lot of influence coming from their mum who they say bakes and cooks the most amazing food. Achala is essentially the baker while his sister Nisha is the one who overlooks the creative aspect of the products. It is best that orders are placed at least three to four days in advance. The Batter Factory has been in operation since July 2014 with them starting with two bake sales in August and October 2014. What I loved about all their treats is the attention to the detail. Their love for baking and all things delicious really comes through while the unique flavours and textures can be credited to the high quality of ingredients used, most of which are imported from the US and Australia.
