need! And the name on everyone’s lips is Rio ice cream. They’ve even branched out to Sea Street in Negombo.
However, there is no need to head all the way to Jaffna or Negombo to get your sugary-milk-fix i.e. Rio ice cream, as they can be found in Wellawatte just at the end of Station Road and Marine Drive.
The Rio ice cream truck is hard to miss in all its white-and-colourful-ice-cream photo-glory! And come mid June, a permanent Rio ice cream parlour will be a feature in the same location.
The ice cream isn’t your typical creamy ice cream but it’s certainly a unique experience. For some reason, the flavour of the ice cream tends to transport me to my childhood with its ice-choc sort of texture and milk powdery flavour.
While the warm weather in Colombo makes it a great excuse to indulge in Rio ice cream (even though there really is no excuse needed when you want that sweet ice cream fix!) In addition Rio ice cream is an affordable treat with prices for their various sundaes not being above Rs.200.
The Rio Special seems to be the most popular among Rio fans who flock to the truck which is open throughout the week, from 9am till around midnight. The Rio Special consists of four flavours of ice cream, nuts, jelly and fruit – it’s extremely sweet, but, when you want to indulge in something sweet, what’s not to love!
Rio ice cream have the standard ice cream flavours, that of:Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry as well as Mango, Fruit and Nut and Blueberry. The Mega Special is also said to be an interesting sundae to try out while their Chocolate, Vanilla, Mango, Blueberry and Strawberry Sundaes as well as their ice cream on cones, are quite popular. Apart from their famous sundaes they also sell ice-chocs and ice cream tubs.

Prabanjan: I come here a number of times a week and today I am digging into the Fruit and Nut Sundae. I like it a lot but the Rio ice cream
parlour in Jaffna serves better ice cream.
Thushara: The Rio Special is pretty awesome. Once you are halfway through the ice cream, you hit the jelly and the fruits which is a great touch.
