Most Popular New Year Resolutions

When the year is coming to an end all of starts to rethink the way we live. We begin to think of ways in which we can improve it. This is when we begin to make a list of resolutions to follow. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when the holidays starts. The majority (including myself) fail to keep them. But we make a new list and keep on trying anyway.

Here is a list of resolutions that are adopted by most.

Getting In Shape

Losing weight is the most popular one, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. This is on my list every New Year! It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet program, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run.

Start Eating Healthy

This is usually an extension of the previous resolution. Switching to a healthier diet can be incredibly tricky when we are surrounded by cheap junk food. I can easily work out regularly but saying no to sweets and junk food is a huge challenge. However, with a good amount of determination and some basic tips you can slowly develop healthier eating habits. Learn to control emotional eating and be aware of reasons for diets to fail.

Travel More

Most of us lead a very routine life. We barely make time to take some time off and see new places. It’s tempting to want to get out and see more of the world, especially if you feel stuck in your rut or you haven’t been anywhere lately. This is one of the most common resolutions, just be sure to be a bit more specific on where you want to go because vague ideas rarely get done. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant trip overseas, I am certain that there are enough places in Sri Lanka that you haven’t seen already. I know I have!

Start Saving More

It’s time to start putting some money aside. You tell this to yourself every year. A rainy day fund and some extra money that can go towards traveling abroad, fixing up the house or buying a new car are a welcome change of pace. It is not easy as it sounds, I can personally vouch for that. But it is important that we make a habit out of it. Having a low limit on your credit cards will help.

Find A Significant Other

We don’t like to admit it but we all made this resolution at some point. We all need someone to hold at night, talk to and share our deepest secrets with, but finding the right person is a matter of trial and error. We need to go out and get to know a bunch of potential partners before we can find the one that we can get along with really well.

Meet New People

We usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities for networking and having fun. I am an introvert myself and I know how hard it can be. You don’t have it alone, find a friend who wants to do the same. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental wellbeing and help your career, so don’t be afraid to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness, get some knowledge and go and get to know new and interesting people.

Become More Active

Some people don’t really have a big weight problem but they just sit around the most of the time at home and at work, which can have a negative effect on their posture and health. In that case, all you need is to find ways of moving around more throughout the day instead of staying hunched over the computer. It’s even more fun if you share your activity with friends and family. Watch less TV. Go outdoors more. When planning your next outing with your friends, don’t just go for a movie and lunch; plan to go bowling or play tap rugger or even just on a nice long stroll in the beach or a park.

Volunteering

Find a cause that you are passionate about and volunteer your time at an organization that is working on it. Most schools, universities and even companies engage in a lot of social work. So all you need to do is inquire a little and pick one.  You don’t have to do it full time or donate financially. But the sense of helping someone else or even just knowing that you are doing your part in making a difference will bring contentment that nothing else can.

Quitting A Bad Habit

This can be anything that you feel like has a negative impact on you. It can range from smoking to biting your nails or not getting enough sleep. A habit is very difficult to get rid of. With enough will power and encouragement it is possible. Even if it was on your resolution list for a couple of years straight don’t give up just yet. Try to quit this year!

Learn Something New

Use your free time in a constructive manner and pick up new skills while having fun at the same time. The Future You will be glad that you did. No matter if you’re interested in communication skills or sports, find out how to learn new skills and hobbies in a short time. You can even attempt to learn a new language or an instrument or paint! There are so many things you can do. Challenge yourself. Do that one thing you always said you wanted to try out.

Stop procrastinating. I know it’s difficult to keep your resolutions. It is a daily struggle. I find that it helps to print your list and put it up in a place where you can see them every day. Maybe you can try it yourself.
