A black and white portrait of Marylin Monroe, gazing seductively back at you in a way that only the blonde bombshell can, is what first caught my eye when attending an exhibition recently.

Imagine my surprise when I was walking up to get a better look at this beautiful potrairt, that I notice the tiniest of pencil storkes across the picture. My first assumption that this was a photograph of the actress was immediately put to rest when I was informed this amazing work of art was the creation of sketch artist Indika Wijewhardana.

Indika, a self established portrait artist, has been sketching portriats since the age of 15. Over the years he has ventured to perfect his technique capturing every intricate detail in his art. Since his launch he has produced portraits for many, securing a loyal clientele.

Life Online caught up with the artist to find out more about him and his art.

How did it all begin?

As a child the only thing I ever learnt with great enthusiasm was Art. Although I selected maths for a/levels, I never gave up drawing.

Why do you only sketch portraits?

I also draw animals but I think the Human face comes more naturally to me.

What was the first portrait you ever sketched?

S.W.R.D Bandaranaike

Why only pencil?

It’s not like I haven’t tried other mediums, I have. Pencils just work better for me. Also I travel a lot. So it’s easier for me to carry a set of pencils than tubes and tubes of oil paints.

Any particular artist who influences you?

Paul Cadden. His portraits are brilliants. He captures every emotion to the tiniest wrinkle. I’m working right now to get to that level.

Favourite portrait you have done to date?

My mom and Dad. See my dad does art work as well but was never valued as an artist. So a portrait of him was like a tribute to him and his unaccredited work.

Whose portrait do you really want to draw?

Captain Jack Sparrow. Looks fun.

The toughest portrait you have done?

Marilyn Monroe.

How is Sri Lanka for potential artists?

The crowd that exercises an interest in art here is very small. The arts culture in Sri Lanka has to improve.

Future plans?

To have a solo exhibition and then travel around the world.
