Pedlar's Inn is one of those well known cafés in the Galle Fort for serving tasty and reasonably priced, food. Right across the street from the café is their Gelateria which serves some of the finest gelato.
Taste and value for money – 4 stars
The gelato are divided into two that of milk and fruit and priced at Rs. 250 per scoop. The milk flavours that are generally on offer are Chocolate, Vanilla Bourbon, Hazelnut, Pistachio, Black Cherry and Coconut while their fruit flavours include, Lime, Banana, Pineapple, Strawberry, Mango and Melon.
Served in either a waffle cone or cup it is one of the best things to have while you walk through the Fort enjoying the scenery and laidback lifestyle that the Galle Fort has to offer.
Among the fruity options we went for were Passion Fruit and Strawberry. Both flavours usually tend to be citrusy but these were the perfect balance of that hint of sour and sweet while also being milky and smooth. The tiny pieces of fruit in the gelato complimented the flavour and texture of the fruity gelato.
On a whole their ice creams do not have an artificial after taste which is so very welcome. A must try among the milk flavours are Pistachio, Black Cherry and Coconut. We tried these along with a scoop of chocolate gelato in a sundae and even though the combination may seem a bit farfetched, each flavour complimented the other, especially the chocolate and coconut.
Ambience and friendly staff – 5 stars
The laidback atmosphere coupled with the oh-so-polite staff, who egg you on to try out more flavours makes it a lovely stop when visiting the Galle Fort! The latter may not be the best option on your wallet or your waist, but it is certainly fantastic on your taste buds!
Parking – 3 stars
Depending on the time and which day of the week parking can be tricky. So it is best to park near the Dutch Hospital. But the best way to really take in what the Galle Fort has to offer is on foot.
