Delectable new vegetarian options at Sugar Bistro

In many ways Sugar Bistro has got the perfect combination from the chilled out, casual atmosphere to the delectable food, refreshing drinks and scrumptious desserts, while the reasonable prices are an added bonus. The staff at Sugar Bistro including Amila Fernando,(the manager on the day we visited the restaurant), are delightfully pleasant at all times which is the icing on the cake, as far as I am concerned.

Three weeks ago, they introduced two vegetarian options into their menu, which include a Hyderabadi style Vegetable Kofta Masala served with Spicy Fried Potato, Green Chutney and Paratha (Rs 850). What I liked about the paratha wedges was that they were soft and slightly chewy and complimented the vegetable kofta and potato perfectly. Topped with a bit of green chutney it was a delectable and filling dish.

The other addition to the menu is the Paneer Biryani served with Pineapple and Mango Chutney, Raita and Pappadam (Rs 900). The rice was cooked perfectly and the chunks of paneer along with the rice was full of flavour while the sweet and hint of heat of the mango chutney along with the cooling raita and crunchy pappadam made it a lovely treat for the senses. Even if you love your meat, I can guarantee that you won’t necessarily miss your meat much.

Sugar Bistro also has two new additions to their dessert menu, that of a Layered Coconut and Passionfruit Verrine (Rs 550) and a Lemongrass and Lychee Panacotta (Rs 475). The ideal way to indulge in the former is dive deep into the glass so as to savour all the layers. The second layer includes a brandy snap which adds a lovely texture to the otherwise creamy and smooth dessert. The bottom layer consisted of a thick layer of sweet, soft, passionfruit jelly while the rest of the layers consisted of the same in thinner layers along with a creamy coconut layer. The combination can put a smile on your face even on a gloomy day, as it is such a happy tropical dessert.

The Lemongrass and Lychee Panacotta is far less sweet and I loved how the subtle flavour of the lemongrass gave a refreshing feel on your palate. It was topped with a crumble and pieces of lychee on top along with a sprint of mint. Each aspect of this simple and subtly flavoured dessert gelled well thus making it a perfect ending to a heavy meal on a warm Friday afternoon.
