Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management at SLIIT hosts ‘Masterclass’ by Celebrity Chef Peter Kuruvita

The Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management (CAHM) at SLIIT hosted award winning celebrity chef Peter Kuruvita, who conducted a ‘Masterclass’ promoting the use of Australia’s finest produce to create amazing culinary delights.

The ‘Masterclass’ was organised by the Australian High Commission in Colombo, in conjunction with the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka which was represented by many top chefs from the very best hospitality establishments around the nation. The chefs participated in the ‘Masterclass’ and prepared Peter Kuruvita’s recipes with a selected group of students who are currently studying the Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management at CAHM at SLIIT.

Peter’s ‘Masterclass’ highlighted his passion for food and enthusiasm working with professional chefs and students to prepare delectable dishes that contained a strong combination of both Sri Lankan and Australian influences.

Chief Executive Officer of CAHM at SLIIT, Steven Bradie-Miles said, ‘it was truly an honour and a privilege for all of us here at CAHM to host this ‘Masterclass’ and we are very grateful that Peter not only shared his knowledge and skills but also has inspired our students to continue to learn what they love’. Bradie-Miles also stated that ‘CAHM at SLIIT appreciates the work by a number of staff at the Australian High Commission for arranging such a great event and the support we received from the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka’.

CAHM at SLIIT Chef Kapila Jayanetti said, ‘without a doubt this ‘Masterclass’ conducted by Chef Peter and the parties involved, have just witnessed an event and cooperation that I do not believe has ever been seen here in Sri Lanka, we at CAHM at SLIIT will be glad to welcome Chef Peter back for future events’.

As a joint venture of SLIIT, CAHM and William Angliss Institute (WAI)– Australia launched the first ever internationally recognized school for hospitality management in Sri Lanka in July 2012.

While extending his sincere appreciation to Peter Kuruvita, CAHM at SLIIT and the Australian High Commission, Professor Lalith Gamage, President and CEO of SLIIT noted, “with many new hotels commencing operations in Sri Lanka, our goal is to promote and produce world class graduates in the hospitality industry, enabling them to be a part of renowned hotel chains. The collaboration we have with CAHM at SLIIT and William Angliss Institute is a great achievement in the education field and it will contribute to the tourism industry; one of the most powerful income generators in Sri Lanka. We hope to continue this fruitful partnership and see our students become experts in the industry”.

“The hotel sector is one of the most global careers a Sri Lankan student can choose. Along with many local and international students, CAHM at SLIIT’s lecturers are chosen for their industry and academic experience to ensure each course is a great balance of theory and practical training” commented Errol Weerasinghe, Chairman of CAHM at SLIIT.

William Angliss Institute is the number one institute for hospitality management in Australia and is a globally recognized leader in specialist training and education in tourism, hospitality and the culinary arts. The curriculum taught in Australia and Sri Lanka is the same and one of the learning objectives is to ensure students are placed in real industry situations giving students an opportunity to learn from experts in the industry. Classes are conducted at the SLIIT – Malabe Campus, with a five star facility,  housing a multi-use training kitchen, a training restaurant, model bedrooms and an IT training center for students’ practical training.
