Latest Goodies at Délicieux

There are cakes and cakes but it is not all cakes that can make it to the top of my list of amazing ones. The number one aspects of importance to me are flavour and moistness. I think Délicieux is one of the few places that have fulfilled these requirements for me and Manesha Peiris is the chirpy personality behind these simply amazing treats.

She has a wide variety of options which have been featured before in this page so this week, I will be looking at some of her latest goodies which include the vegan range (which have no eggs, milk or butter), as well as some additions to her “high spirited” range of cakes and even some classy sweet breads and loaves.

Just one bite into her Vegan Dark Chocolate Klubnika transports you to a happy place. This absolutely stunning dark chocolate cake comes with a strawberry puree filling and three layers of chocolate frosting infused with some head spinning spirits and topped with real strawberries. Every bite is rich and full of dark chocolaty goodness while the strawberry puree compliments the chocolate, taking this cake to a whole other level. I have never tasted something this divine. Klubnika translates to strawberries in Russian, in case you were wondering and with all the strawberries and dark chocolate that go into this cake, the name just says it all.

Another to her “spirit infused” range are her Vegan Black Velvet Cupcakes. These pretty rose patterned “spirited” frosted cupcakes can be customised with a colour of your choice for the frosting. I felt that they would be ideal for a bachelorette party because of how pretty they look and also for the “kick” you get from consuming them. Another delicious treat in her vegan range is her Vegan Fudge Brownie. If you didn’t know they were vegan, chances are you never would. They taste just as amazing as a normal brownie and are oh so chocolaty.

Manesha also has these wonderful no baked treats which are non vegan. I really loved the sophisticated flavour of her Cookie Dough Cake. This soft cookie dough cake has a slight hint of almond and a touch of amaretto flavour and comes with a layer of sinful dark chocolate inside and topped with dark chocolate swirls and golden sparkly drizzles of bees honey. My mouth waters just describing it! A little less sophisticated but still extremely delicious are her Oreo Magic Bars. This too is a no-bake treat with a chocolaty crust, topped with crushed Oreos and condensed milk.

Another sinful treat, in terms of texture and just in how they taste, are Manesha’s Lustvolle Fantasy Brownies. These deep dark red treats are Red Velvet Brownies with a thick slab of Belgian Dark Chocolate inside topped with droplets of stewed Strawberries – A chocolate and strawberry lust-filled fantasy indeed.

Délicieux also has a range of non vegan breads and loaves which Manesha says would be ideal for the Avurudu Season. Her breads too are extremely moist and fruity. She uses fruit and fruit juice in her breads but the fruit does not overpower these breads. This range includes Banana Bread, Pumpkin Loaf, Date Loaf as well as the Apple and Cinnamon Cake and Pineapple Cake. The latter is similar to a pineapple upside down but is a unique treat on its own. I am a sucker for that real cinnamon-apple flavour and the Apple and Cinnamon Cake didn’t disappoint. It was light and ideal for afternoon tea.

Manesha’s love for baking comes from her mother who she says is her biggest critic and support system at the same time. She could best be described as the person who taught her everything she knows about baking and helps her maintain the highest of standards. Just a chat with Manesha makes it easy to understand why her goodies taste so amazing – it is her love for all things sinfully sweet and decadent.

She is a lecturer in Information Technology at APIIT in Colombo and baking was something she started off as a hobby. “My friends really like what I made and were eager to try out what I made,” she explains adding that they were willing guinea pigs! She was told that her treats had the potential to go places and therefore decided she should start selling her goodies after work. So after a hard day at work she comes home to complete her orders and have them ready in time for pick up. Since she juggles her day job with her baking she needs at least a week’s notice for an order which has to be picked up from her residence in Colombo 9.
