One of the latest additions to the various fast food spots in and around Colombo is Korean Barbecue better known as KBQ, which opened its doors around three months in Etul Kotte. (They also have an outlet in Ja-Ela).

I must say that their menu even though small (there’s a total of eight dishes), is packed with some interesting choices. The star on their menu is the freshly made, skinless fried chicken. When you first look at it, it looks just like KFC but once you have a bite, you realise how different it is.

The seasonings accompanied by the various sauces make this an interesting treat, while the chicken can be enjoyed with well-loved banchan (Korean side dishes) like Kimchi and pickled radish. Another important fact which makes this different from KFC is the fact that the chicken is skinless and therefore said to be healthier.

We tried out some Fire Chicken which is served with a tangy red sauce, as well as Padak Chicken, served with shredded leaks and a spicy yellow sauce. The former has been made with the five senses in mind, says Chef Yogi, the head chef of KBQ, while the sauce served with the latter is quite interesting on your palate due to the crunchy leaks and the sauce, which gives you a kick similar to wasabi!

The chicken dishes aside we also tried out one of their noodle dishes – JaJangmyeon –  a thick noodle served with chunjang (a salty black paste made out of the soybean) and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Accompanied with Kimchi and pickled radish, it was quite yum. This dish is usually made with diced pork and vegetables or seafood but the option available at KBQ is totally vegetarian.

Even though the fried chicken on the menu isn’t necessarily the healthiest of foods to indulge in on a frequent basis, I must say that the subtle flavours (which aren’t all too common in Colombo), were quite refreshing for a palate used to salty and oily fast food.

All this washed down with some ginger beer, I must admit, was quite a treat.

KBQ also serves rice as an accompaniment while they have takeaway and free delivery in and around Colombo. However, their noodle dishes are not available for delivery – Chef Yogi explains, “The noodles get sticky around 10 minutes after they’ve been prepared, therefore, it won’t be ideal to eat when it reaches you, therefore we recommend that you come along to our outlet to enjoy these dishes.”

He also explains that around 10 to 12 minutes are required to prepare the dishes as they are made fresh, so therefore, keep in mind to bear
with them, if they take a while!
