Feasting on Ice Cream at Park Street Mews

Who really can say no to a hefty scoop of yummy ice cream? Ice cream is your usual go-to choice of dessert on a balmy afternoon in Colombo, and it’s something you’d never tire.

Park Street Mews has introduced ice cream and sorbet to their menu, made fresh in the kitchen everyday by Chef Rohan Perera. Chef Rohan whips up these delectable frozen delights daily, each one his own recipe! “It’s been 3-4 months since we introduced the ice cream to the menu and it’s been a customer favourite,” he explained.

Currently the flavours include mango, cheese, curd, passion fruit, coffee, wood apple, avocado, orange, burnt caramel, rhubarb, chocolate and chai while the sorbet flavours are limited to four and include passion fruit, apple, strawberry and a lychee. I sampled six of the eleven ice cream flavours and revelled in the fact that each flavour had a character of its own. The chocolate was rich (just as chocolate should be!), sweet and tasted much like a liquid version of gooey chocolate cake, and a lovely smooth texture to it. Tart, with seeds in the reddish pink scoop of ice cream, the strawberry was lovely, refreshing and much like liquid strawberry jam.

If you love your thick, fresh fruit juices, you would definitely appreciate the summery flavours brought out by the mango and avocado (and I imagine the passion fruit is similar). Both flavours tasted like frozen versions of freshly blended juice but creamier and thicker. Next, I sampled the cheese ice cream which is definitely for the adventurous. It tasted vaguely of curd and quite sour which I didn’t quite seem to enjoy but something different in ice cream can be a good thing so give it a try if you feel like you’d enjoy this.

I saved the best for last, and this would be the burnt caramel. Chef Rohan reliably informs me that this happens to be the most popular and requested flavour and I see why. The light brown scoop tasted exactly like creamy liquid melting toffee, and I imagine it would taste fantastic alongside a slice of warm butter cake.

I love that the flavours here encapsulate comfort food favourites such as chocolate cake and jam, and they’re not too expensive either as a single scoop would cost you Rs.100++ while the deal for 3 scoops is much more advisable and costs Rs.350++, where you can pick any three flavours of choice.

Do have a look at the chalk board inside (sometimes displayed outside the restaurant) for flavours available for the day, and just indulge. Park Street Mews is located at 50/1 Park Street, Colombo 02.
