A chat with Gamya Wijayadasa, the face behind the brand ‘WAIDURYA’

Fashion designer, model, actress and now brand owner creates exquisitely beautiful and unique designs for WAIDURYA , a brand that is embarking to be an internationally recognised fashion label. Gamya represented Sri Lanka at the Miss World pageant and is also a passionate traveller.

How did your interest in fashion begin?

Fashion to me is life. It's in the simple things everyday and I had an interest in it from my childhood. I would design my own dresses and have my mom make them.

As former Miss Sri Lanka for Miss World and now a designer and entrepreneur, how does evolving fashion and style fascinate you?

I believe in style. Not fashion. Fashion evolves and style is forever. Style is originality and comfort for me. I don't create something I don't believe in. I have to love each piece for me to present it to my clients.

As the owner for the brand WAIDURYA how are you get inspired to create pieces for your collection?

I am inspired by everyday life. Nature and architecture is a huge part of my collections. I do a lot of sketching that result in nothing and most of the time they go on to become beautiful pieces.

Your favourite Bollywood look?

Saris are my favourite because they are so classic and universally flattering. I like the idea of handing it down to the next generation.

Your most favourite Hollywood street style?

Street style for me is keeping things simple and straight forward. So jeans and a simple blouse or jeans and t-shirt. I like to invest in a good handbag to lift the look and a bit of accessories, especially with one statement jewelry piece.

WAIDURYA designs were absolutely adored by the clients at a luxury event took place in Sydney recently. How do you feel when your label has reached international recognition?

When we participated in the Sydney event we were a bit nervous but honestly really loved every bit of it. Being told in person how lovely my work is made me want to be better. WAIDURYA is getting more invitations now and we are going to be at a luxury event in Dubai this December.

What projects are you currently undertaking and where do you see yourself in the future?

Currently preparing for the summer collection and very excited about it. Also working on a Western wear collection and that's a huge exciting phase of the brand.
