Domenico’s – The tasty and affordable option for classic Italian style pizza

Pizza parlours seem to be mushrooming around and about Colombo as of late and I must admit that most of these places serve some fabulous thin crust pizzas. Another to this growing number of fabulous pizza parlours is Domenico’s, situated in Thimbirigasyaya (right slap bang opposite the wow.lk building).

Domenico’s was initially opened as a pizza delivery and take away spot but having received a number of inquiries about dine-in they decided to add a few tables and a cosy dine-in spot was born. “We got it going in 25 days,” Ruvi Gunatilaka says. Ruvi and her husband are the co-owners of the pizza parlour but the delicious food is made by their pizza chef, Domenico. They have been in operation for nearly three weeks and Ruvi says that it is their Polos pizza that is their best seller! It is so popular that the day I visited they didn’t have any left. Using fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella and curried polos, it is one pizza I am looking forward to trying out.

They have a variety of sides too like Bruschetta using homemade bread and topped with fresh tomato, oregano, garlic and a healthy drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. They also serve an excellent Caprese as well as a Tuna Carpaccio with Cicco. Served on a bed of crunchy lettuce accompanied with chunky slices of mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and then drizzled with oregano and extra virgin olive oil their Caprese was so light and refreshing. The Tuna Carpaccio was also delicious. The finely sliced fresh tuna topped with loads of lemon juice and capers make your taste buds go wild with excitement.

Domenico’s also dishes out homemade pastas, which include a variety of lasagne and even a Vegetarian Parmigiana. However, these were left for me to discover on another day! The pizzas here are not typically authentic in terms of the toppings used but instead they have added a twist and made the pizzas their own. Among their 13-inch pizzas, one of my favourites was their Vegetarian pizza. It comes topped with a healthy helping of mozzarella, mushrooms, mixed vegetables, Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs and extra virgin olive oil over a delicious base of tomato sauce and a perfectly thin crust fine pizza. It is a must have! The textures are unusual for a pizza while the bread crumbs give a delicious crunch to the vegetables.

If you like a slight Indian twist to your pizza, go for the Butter Chicken. With tomato sauce, mozzarella, marinated chicken, onions, garlic, capsicum and cashew nuts it is unlike any pizza I have had and is so full of flavour. No pizzeria is complete without a delectable Four Cheese pizza and Domenico dishes out a fabulous one using Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, Emmental and Parmesan Cheese. It is such a simple pizza but bursting with flavour. After all, you cannot go wrong with so many delicious cheeses!

How can you not end a fabulous Italian food spree without some wonderful Tiramisu! Well, Domenico whips up a Tiramisu like no other. There are two to choose from, namely Domenico’s Chocolate Affair which is a chocolate cream tiramisu and Nonna’s Tiramisu which is classic Italian Tiramisu made using a special homemade coffee cream atop soft Savoiardi.
