Tucking Into Treats at Miss Whisk!

Joining the bandwagon of home bakers in Colombo, Miss Whisk delights taste buds – especially with her tasty, freshly baked cupcakes. Wishing to remain anonymous, Miss Whisk’s passion for baking stemmed at an early age, and following various baking experiences in the kitchen, she finally decided to open her own business, specializing in assorted cupcakes, cake, strawberry tarts and Swiss rolls.

The venture is just a little over a month old but orders keep pouring in daily, especially from customers who have picked a favourite already – the Glaziator, a chocolate cupcake with a light chocolate glaze. I sample this supposed favourite and can understand why. The cupcake itself is quite soft and moist, with a spread of chocolate glaze, which compliments the confection very well simply because it isn’t overly rich or sweet, so you’d find yourself reaching for another without any hesitation.

The range includes choco chunks, choco crumble, chocolate Oreo, vanilla Oreo, choco butter, strawberries and cream, red velvet, vanilla rose, twisty blue, coffee and chocolate, salted caramel, lemon, lemon meringue with marshmallow icing, vanilla and a chocolate. The chocolate Oreo is perfect if you like that combination of cookie in your desserts, and the soft cream with cookie bits pairs up wonderfully with the chocolate cupcake. One bite and I’m bowled over by the lemon cupcake – who doesn’t love a bit of that citrusy flavour infused in a dessert? It isn’t too tart and just the right amount of lemon flavour. Despite being quite sweet, the salted caramel cupcake is just divine. This cupcake comes topped with caramel buttercream drizzled with a salted caramel sauce, and when you bite into it, thick toffee sweet caramel oozes out.

The vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream is excellent and the humble flavour makes it a classic favourite, next to the chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream. Miss Whisk also does beautiful ombré cakes, rainbow cakes, polka dotted Swiss roll in vanilla and chocolate, novelty cupcakes with fondant, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet cakes, and meringues. She’s also hoping to introduce macarons to the menu soon. She is assisted by two of her friends, who handle the social media and occasional baking, and owes her success to them as well.
