This week on the Local Scene we feature an extremely talented guitarist who has been the limelight of many gigs that he has played for. Mike is a part of the Symphony Experimental X-rays, the band that emerged runners up at TNL Onstage 2014 and was also judged the best musician in the competition. Check out his take on music and his love for the guitar.

What made you pick the guitar?

I picked it because compared to all the other instruments, the guitar was always the cooler instrument to play on top of a stage.

How long have you been playing for?

I started playing when I was around 15. So I guess I've been playing for around 7 years now.

Where did you learn to play?

My grandpa thought me my first few chords and then on it was by ear.

What styles do you prefer to play?

I'm more of a blues person but, these days I've been trying out some new things. Which pulls out more of a phrygian effect.

How did you end up in the mad SEX and KALM?

We formed SEX to play for Tantalize in 2012, didn't have a lot of future plans for the band but we ended up sticking together because it felt really good playing with the guys where there was so much of energy on stage. KALM started off as a commercial project but later on jamming together we realized that there was more it than what we expected it to be. SEX being a burst of energy, KALM is more ambientic. There's no rush. Playing in the band gets each of us lost in what we play, which make the notes we play more personal, like an expression of feelings that you were never able to put out.

How has winning Best Musician at Onstage helped you in your career?

Onstage as a whole helped me get my name out there and introduced me to the audience for what I do. And winning the award was a big achievement in my life.

What sets the guitar apart from other instruments?

Well for me the connection or the bond that I have with my instrument, the guitar, is very personal. I'm able to express myself with it. And having the guitar in my hand I'm able to get away from everything else and just lose myself in what I play. I think that's what sets it apart.

What is your personal practice schedule like?

I don't have a schedule per se. It's just that I take the guitar to my hand and play it when ever I feel like it.

Who are your inspirations?

David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Ritchie Kotzen, Eric Clapton.

The most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on stage?

Well, nothing too big. One time I walked in front and the guitar cable pulled the amp forward where everything just fell down.

Where do you see your music career ten years from now?

I'll always be doing what I love. Playing the instrument I play.
