Burger King

Burger King which opened in Sri Lanka recently has been creating quite a buzz on the lips of foodies in and around Colombo with three outlets in Kolpetty, Mount Lavinia and Rajagiriya.

Equipped with ample parking, clean dining areas and a play area for kids, it is just about the right spot to take your family for a quick bite.

Burger King or BK, is well known overseas, especially in the United States for the size of its burgers. In fact, it is the size of their burgers that makes them stand out among most of their competitors.

However in Sri Lanka, I the BK burgers are smaller than the ones I have tried out in the US.

I visited BK on Friday January 17 and in spite of the burgers being small, they do taste more or less the same; they have a decent number of options on their menu from burgers like Grilled Chicken, Chicken Royale, Veggie Burger and the BK Fish ‘N Crisp as well as specials like the Whopper and BBQ Turkey Strips with Grilled Beef.

In all honesty the latter was quite disappointing for two reasons – turkey strips and size. I guess it boils down to a preference but turkey strips just don’t do it for me while the burger is small.

Their Whopper however was actually quite tasty in spite of it being relatively smaller than the quarter pound Whopper in the US so if you do head to BK I think the Whopper is the most satisfying burger to try from the lot.

However, due to the feedback they have received on the size of their burgers, BK’s Facebook page announced this week: “The size of our Burgers have increased and are now 4 inches! So come on over and try it out today!”

They seem to have gotten their desserts right though with their yummy Hershey’s Sundae Pie along with their various Ice Cream Sundaes ranging from soft serve with either strawberry, chocolate or caramel topping.

I’d definitely recommend the Hershey’s Sundae Pie which has a chocolate crust along with a chocolate crème filling, garnished with a creamy topping and Hershey’s Chocolate Chips. I also quite liked their Caramel Ice Cream Sundae.

Aside from these you also have a choice of sides like Onion Rings, Chicken Nuggets and French Fries. I am not a big fan of fries but the BK fries are good owing to the fact that they are thicker than the usual string fries. A delight with some yummy ketchup! They also have the usual range of local fizzy drinks on offer like Pepsi, 7 Up, Mirinda, Ginger Beer and Cream Soda.

BK is a disappointment to anyone who has been to a US/UK BK. Nothing striking about the menu (even the nuggets are identical to what Mc Donalds serve), No Bacon (no offense to anyone but I feel like I'm living in Saudi Arabia), and the large drink looks like a kiddes drink! Well that's just my opinion - and ur assured to have one less repeat customer. Hope you don't end up with the same fate Nando's had sometime back.

way better service than kfc good food neatly packed

  3. RG UK says:

I worked for BK UK. Very disappointing pictures. The burgers look horrible.! Is the first pic a chicken mayo ?? Gosh it looks terrible.. What standards are we talking about here.. Mind you. BK maintains very high standards over here..

  4. Observer says:

Well folks, McDonald, Burger King and KFC are not doing well in the Western World, so what do they do.....go to the 3rd world countries to introduce their unhealthy menu. In the US people are realizing the damage they have done for so many years.

  5. Maneesha says:

Good food?? Better service?? Burger King McDonals are all junk food joints people.. Not fine dinning and cirtainly not healthy or good food.. People in srilanka will go nuts over anything from abroad. But sensible people in other countries don't eat this stuff regullarly.

  6. AB says:

The portions are soo small .The burgers looked like marie biscuits . BK there are enough and more burger options in Sri Lanka . Get your portions right or god bless you ........

Had my first experience of BK at the Rajagiriya outlet few weeks back. Quite disappointing, the Burgers are very small, a regular meal looks like a Kiddies meal. No value for money, at all. SoftLogic, you guys need to sit and re-think well, if you are planning to become popular here. Comparatively KFC, McD, DineMore etc are providing us great value for money, with great taste !

  8. Amused says:

This is burger King! nothing more nothing less. Low quality fast food. thats what its meant to be. I don't get why all of a sudden sri lankans are ever ready to critique food like we've been food guru's our entire life. We've eaten junk for ever even from supposed fine dining restaurants and now we are jumping the gun and trying rate a fast food restaurant. its meant to be FAST, SIMPLE CHEAP. If going by economics of scale, and they were to serve a one pound burger we'd be paying a 1000 bucks f

There is no question that Fast Food has come to stay in SL. Parents should use these place with caution and only to provide a treat for thie children and not as a routine source of inutrition. The USA has ended up having the most number of obese people in the World thanks to Fast Food which is cheap, tasty and available in minutes. Nothin compares to a home cooked meal, even if it is just rice and a couple of vegetables. Processed foods are the source of heart, digestive and kidney disease.

  10. PM says:

Sri Lankan people should be educated about these fast and unhealthy foods. People should not consume BK, KFC or McD regularly. As the "Observer"

  11. InformationAddict says:

Firstly, BK here is a disappointment, far below international standards. The food seems to be in kids' portions and not appetizing for the eyes. Secondly, (No offense to my Muslim brothers) but why is it Halal? BK in all other countries are not Halal - also we're not in Pakistan or Saudi, this is Sri lanka.... SRI LANKA... Thirdly, to anyone who doesn't understand what junk food is, eating rice and curry daily is not healthy either unless in proper portions, white rice is the most fattening fo

  12. OMG! says:

C'mon people, why the big deal about cheap fast junk food? They are not even worth talking about. They are there to grab a bite if you are on the run and no other food is available but not to eat as a meal unless you want to be obese with heart disease etc.

  13. citizen says:

Thirds world countries are dumpling sites for western countries. Food, Factories etc.,

  14. Jagath watawela says:

Learn from Royal College Colombo to proliferate hygienic ally prepared Kola Kenda, an indigenous and healthy food with no side effects what so ever. this is what the west wants us to do. profit at the cost of an unhealthy and dumb nation that will be hooked to buy more healthcare and western drugs from the mega pharmaceutical industry in connivance of promoting this unhealthy food to our parts of the world.

  15. GMTX says:

Did my first visit last evening to the Mt. Lavinia Branch and was disappointed with the potions and found NO VALUE for MONEY nothing much of a difference when compared to McDonald's on Taste, i would still go with the Slave Island "Burgers King" for taste and Value. the only good was the fries which lacked salt but good quality. Ice Cream cone was terrible. i will sure not be a repeat customer even though i live close to the place. Long way to go, BK can take "Burgers King Malay St. as there b

  16. anna says:

quite amusing how people get excited about a measly fast food restaurant. god forbid if you have Michelin star restaurant. There will be a riot. Pathetic

  17. Sylvia Haik says:

As the Westerners get more educated about food nutrition, these fast food outlets are on the decline in the West. In UK MacDonalds have diversified into selling salads. Their only option appear to be the 3rd world just like what they did with cigarettes. Don't fall for their tricks. Most indigenous foods take only seconds more but far more nutritious.

  18. Sparkle Sparkle says:

I have been to BK UK and Saudi and they was quite good. I haven't yet tried out the SL one but will soon. BTW, I think it is good for them to halal because if not the Muslim patrons would have to limit their choices. Personally I like McDonalds (UK) better than burger king but BK can be quite cheaper and bigger.
