Embellishment still grips us in its thrall, it enriches our wardrobes and makes an appearance in both day and night clothes, from a barely-there glimmer to a sumptuous sparkle, add some shine to your wardrobe and a rich feast for the eyes. A focal trend for SS14, it’s carried over into AW14.

Even the most casual clothes can be amped up with high-impact embellishment. The most unassuming things in your wardrobe—tank tops, jeans, basic t’s can be given a glam update and cool unexpected ways to shine. Fabrics encrusted in faceted crystals are set to be a huge trend with everyone from Stella McCartney (mostly on her jeans) and Dolce and Gabbana (on ladylike dresses, corsets and most other things) leading the charge!

There’s nothing quite as jaw droppingly extravagant that lends a sense of extreme confidence to the wearer as a completely embellished (feathers, studs, beading, sequins, crystals) dress. There is however a very fine line in wearing embellishment between sophisticated and uuber tacky bordering on godai, so make sure your feet are firmly planted on the right side of it! The key to flawlessly sporting this trend is finding the perfect balance, so whether you choose moderation or going all out, be sure to carry your look with confidence.

If you don’t want to go all out with the bling bling, shiny effects such as metallic materials, crystal embellishments or mirrored effects go the accessories route. A sequined clutch, crystal embellished shoes or a fabulous hair accessory. A bit of the beauty of this trend is it’s DIY capability. If you’re not in the mood to splurge but want to try it out, take a pair of old jeans and give them an update with crystals.
