The Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2017 is just less than a month away and we couldn’t be more excited! Want to catch some of your favourite authors and performer’s one on one and learn how they came to the top? Well, here are some workshops that you just wouldn’t want to miss out!

January 12 (Thursday)

CATHERINE BUSH on Mastering Three Crucial Aspects of Writing 

Catherine Bush directs the Creative Writing MFA at the University of Guelph, Canada’s premier MFA programme, whose students have astonishing publishing success, wining many prestigious prizes. 

At the workshop, she will engage with three crucial aspects of writing fiction; accessing emotion, paying attention to the world and working with formal constraints. The workshop is ideal for poets and non-fiction writers to heighten technical and perceptual skills and find the liveliness at the heart of their writing.

JEMIMA FOXTROT on The Music of Poetry 

Award- winning poet Jemima Foxtrot will lead games and writing exercises to teach the art of avoiding cliché’s and surprising your reader. At the workshop, you will get the chance to write your first draft of a poem and also have the opportunity to share your work with other workshop attendees!

ALISON WEARING on Memoir 

In this workshop find the tools, insights, direction and inspiration you need to transform your personal stories into literary works. Participants can expect lively discussion, optional writing exercises, reading recommendations, and plenty of good humour. No formal writing experience necessary.

In this insightful workshop, Booker shortlisted award winner, Sunjeev Sahota shares his secrets on how to write good dialogue. At this workshop you can have the chance to practice his techniques and learn how to make your dialogue sing and bring life to the characters you create.

January 14 (Saturday)

CATHY MARIE BUCHANAN on The Craft of Historical Fiction 

Best-selling novelist Cathy Marie Buchanan promises a workshop with lots of discussion and writing exercises. At this workshop she will teach all about finding inspiration in history, using historical source materials, balancing fact and imagination, and conveying time and place.

REINHARD KLEIST on Stories From the Street - Creating Your Own Graphic Work 

In this workshop, Reinhard will help you develop a character. It can be a person that you know, somebody from the street, your neighbour or a character from your imagination. You will learn how to set it in motion and give it characteristic features. Then you will develop a short story together,considering dialogue, how the character is acting in front of a background and what this background can do in our story. Everybody will work with their favourite drawing material, so bring your equipment with you!

JOHN GIMLETTE on Conveying the Essence of Unfamiliar Places 

Travel books come in all shapes and sizes: adventures, ordeals, meanderings or perhaps journeys of personal discovery.  But, often, success depends on the writer’s ability to evoke the spirit of the place (usually foreign) in which he or she travels.  So how do we do that? How do we give a place its mystique - or even its mediocrity?  John will be giving tips on research, observation and language and later will help you recreate that special sense of place all on your own!

Arts Sharing by OPEN BRAIN 

Open Brain is an informal forum for sharing all forms of expression- from traditional arts to knowledge on a topic, to demonstrations of techniques and technologies to...whatever it is you're passionate about! Extemporaneous stories and discussions are always welcome. There is no obligation to share, but sharing is what Open Brain runs on. Come with an open mind, leave full of inspiration and ideas.
