As the holiday season approaches, anticipation builds for Colombo's highly awaited event—the International Christmas Charity Bazaar (ICCB). On December 3rd, from 11 am to 3 pm, the Grand Ballroom of the historic Galle Face Hotel will be transformed into a festive haven for a celebration that transcends mere merriment. The ICCB has evolved into a hallmark event, renowned not only for the joy it brings but for its profound impact on charitable causes.

The ICCB's roots trace back to a group of local and expatriate women who, in 1982, set out on a mission to blend the joy of Christmas with a commitment to philanthropy. The heart of the ICCB lies in its commitment to charitable causes. The ICCB Committee meticulously channels every rupee earned through ticket sales, raffles, and draws to carefully selected beneficiaries. These causes span a wide spectrum, from providing meals for school children to supporting Alzheimer's foundations and initiatives against cancer. The event's success is measured not only in the festive cheer it generates but also in the tangible impact it has on the lives of those in need.

Marianne Johnpillai, Trustee of Homes of Peace and Shelter, shares her journey with the Hearts and Hands project, a participant at the ICCB since 2011. Hearts and Hands contributes handmade cards, quilts, bags, and Christmas decorations, with funds supporting women in need. Originating in 2006 as a housing project for those affected by the tsunami, it has evolved into a support system, empowering women with supplementary income through a dedicated workshop. Marianne emphasizes, “We don't take any money from Hearts and Hands for any of our expenses, and we don't take anything for ourselves. So the money goes to the women.”

As the President of the Zonta Club III of Colombo, Kamini Senaratne expresses gratitude for their involvement with the ICCB since 2018. The club focuses on creating a better world for women and girls, showcasing a variety of products at the ICCB. Proceeds from their sales, including items like cushion covers, tote bags, and special Mehendi stalls, go towards eliminating period poverty and advocating against violence towards women. Kamini adds, “Zonta strives to create a better world for women and girls. So, we will continue to use the proceedings from ICCB to eliminate period poverty, especially targeting schoolgirls in order to provide them equal opportunity and access to education.”

Enhancing the ICCB 2023 experience are raffle draws, offering attendees a chance to win remarkable prizes. The committee has curated a selection of gifts, ranging from handmade items to imported goods. The thrill surrounding these draws adds to the festive atmosphere, making the event not only a charitable affair but also a thrilling experience for all involved. Beyond charitable endeavours and exciting draws, ICCB 2023 promises a sensory feast. Attendees can embark on a culinary journey, savouring delectable foods from around the world. From handmade delicacies to international treats, the event is a paradise for food enthusiasts, adding another layer of enjoyment to the overall experience.

Tickets for ICCB 2023 are priced at Rs 500 and can be purchased from various locations, including Chatham Luxury Watches, PR, Prana Lounge, and Park Street Gourmet. The Grand Ballroom at the Galle Face Hotel will host this extraordinary event, creating a festive ambience that reflects the spirit of giving and unity.

ICCB is not just a charity bazaar; it is a celebration of generosity, culture, and collective goodwill. As Colombo prepares to usher in the holiday season, ICCB stands as a shining example of how a community can come together to make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate. Join the celebration on December 3rd, and be a part of something truly special.
