The show follows the success of the last Sundown Jam held back in March 2020 by the WMA, a few weeks before the coronavirus pandemic hit Sri Lanka. Sundown Jam 2022 returns bigger and better this year, boasting a fantastic line-up displaying a variety of genres, with the promise of a night to remember featuring some of the best artists of the Sri Lankan Western music industry and all-time favourite hits!
The WMA was initiated in 2016 as an association that provides assistance and development to the Western musicians of Sri Lanka and acts as a representative body for the community. The top western musicians and bands in the country are banded together as members of the WMA. The association currently has several hundred musicians and bands within its membership and includes not just Sri Lanka’s leading bands and artistes, but also up and coming bands, rising soloists and instrumentalists, and newcomers from all genres of music across the island in order to support and guide them in navigating and succeeding in the industry.
At the very core of the WMA, CSR and artiste support plays a major role in the work they do. Following the Easter attacks in 2019 and then the onslaught of the present Covid-19 pandemic that has been crippling industries for over 2 years, the WMA has been a pillar of strength to its members in surviving through these times. With new norms in place and the arts and hospitality industry being among the last to resume and recover, the WMA actively worked on long term medical schemes and relief aids for the hundreds of musicians and bands who were unable to source work and perform during these times by organizing fundraisers through virtual concerts and workshops and working with other associations and support organizations.
Sundown Jam ‘22 is yet another fund-raising effort of the WMA for its members in order to continue their work in supporting bands and artistes navigate their way through the new normal. President of the Western Musicians Association and veteran singer Rajitha Rupasinghe of Misty shared that Sundown Jam ‘22 is an exciting event to look forward to. “While we slowly recover from the devastating effects the Covid-19 pandemic had on our industry, we are excited for Sundown Jam 2022 – our biggest event since the pandemic. The night will showcase a variety of genres and talents with a line-up of veterans of the music industry as well as some incredible new, up and coming musicians to look out for.”
Sundown Jam 22 will feature 8 bands including Misty, Daddy, C&C, Redeemers, Shobi’s Jazz Ensemble, Warehouse Project, and the beloved country and western band of the 80’s - Orange Blossom Special. The event will also host 21 solo artists with veterans such as Geoffrey Fernando, Corrine Almeida, Judy De Silva, Piyal Perera, Donald Peiris, Noeline Honter, Sohan Weerasinghe, Sureshni Wanigasuriya, Rukshan Perera, and Clifford Richards as well as up and coming new artistes Sidath Nanayakkara, Radika Rajavelu, Trishelle Wijethunga, Varuni Weeratne, Fabien Bonny and many more.
With a fantastic line-up of the best Western musicians in the country, Sundown Jam 2022 will showcase a variety of entertainment from all genres; going beyond commercial pop music with the inclusion of the genres of rock, R&B, alternative, and country for everyone to enjoy.
Sundown Jam 22 is organized by the WMA Executive Committee for 2021-2023 with Rajitha Rupasinghe as President, Corrine Almeida as Vice President, Judy De Silva as Vice President and Secretary, and Janappriya Weeraratne as Treasurer. WMA Sundown Jam 22 is powered by Dynamic AV and supported by Cool Tempo Entertainment and LIVE Production.
