As respected artist Jayantha Silva prepares to unveil "Expressions 18," the final chapter of his long-standing solo exhibition series, we were privileged to be afforded the opportunity to converse with the veteran artist to discuss his journey, inspirations, and what art aficianados can expect next from him.

Q: "Expressions 18" marks the end of a 22-year journey. How do you feel about closing this chapter?

A: It’s a mix of emotions, really. "Expressions" has been such a significant part of my life, but I believe in moving forward. This final exhibition is not just an ending but also a transition into something new—"Impressions." I hope to continue capturing emotions, but with a fresh perspective.

Q: What can visitors expect from "Expressions 18"?

A: It will be a culmination of everything I have explored over the years—raw emotions, fleeting moments, and the realism that I strive for. Each piece is a reflection of my journey, and I hope visitors will see the evolution of my work.

Q: You’re also collaborating with Shangri-La Colombo for "A Glimpse into Expressions." What’s the idea behind this pre-exhibition display?

A: "A Glimpse into Expressions" is a way for people to revisit the past 22 years of my work before "Expressions 18". It’s a retrospective showcase, allowing art lovers to see how my work has transformed over time. The "Meet the Artist" sessions will also give visitors an opportunity to hear the stories behind the art.

Q: You’ve often spoken about working instinctively. How does that influence your artistic process?

A: I don’t believe in restricting myself to a single style. My process is very instinctive—I observe, absorb, and then translate emotions onto the canvas. My goal is to make each piece as real and honest as possible.

Q: Your eyesight challenge has been mentioned as a factor that enhances your perception. Can you tell us more about that?

A: It’s ironic, but yes, my eyesight has made me more observant. It forces me to focus on details that others might overlook. In a way, it has sharpened my artistic senses, making me more attuned to expressions and emotions.

Q: You were predicted to become an artist just days after your birth. How do you view that prophecy today?

A: It’s fascinating, isn’t it? A Buddhist priest made that prediction when I was just four days old, and my parents named me Jayantha because of it. Looking back, I suppose art was always my destiny. Even as a child, I was constantly drawing—on walls, floors, anything I could find.

Q: Despite your immense talent, you’re largely self-taught. What has that journey been like?

A: I never had formal art training, but I’ve always had a deep passion for learning. I admire Leonardo da Vinci, but I’ve never tried to imitate him. My work is purely a result of my instincts, memory, and commitment to authenticity.

Q: Your art has made its way into private collections and institutions. What do you think makes your work resonate with people?

A: I think it’s the soul in my work. I don’t just paint images—I capture emotions, memories, and moments. People connect with that.

Q: With "Expressions" concluding, what can we expect from "Impressions"?

A: "Impressions" will be an extension of my journey, but with a new approach. I want to explore different themes while maintaining the realism that defines my work. If "Expressions" was about capturing emotions, "Impressions" will be about the lasting impact those emotions leave behind.

Q: Any final thoughts as you prepare for this milestone?

A: Just gratitude. Gratitude for the journey, for the people who have supported me, and for the chance to keep creating. This isn’t the end—it’s just a new beginning.
