Attorney Bert Fields claims the July 11 cover story about the Hollywood actor's split from Katie Holmes was 'riddled with lies'

A war of the words has erupted between the National Enquirer and Tom Cruise’s attorney, who is threatening a multimillion-dollar lawsuit over the tabloid’s latest cover story being “riddled with lies,” according to a report.

The July 11 issue, which delves into Cruise’s high-profile split with wife Katie Holmes, invites readers  “Inside Tom’s House of Horrors!”

The cover also claims, “The Real Tom is a Monster!”

But Bert Fields, Cruise’s attorney, fired off a memo Wednesday to the magazine’s publisher to retract “each and every one of your false assertions ... with the same prominence and emphasis” as the original story, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which obtained the letter.

Fields also noted he’d go to court for compensatory and punitive damages.

In defending Cruise, Fields wrote that the “War of the Worlds” actor is “certainly not a ‘monster.’ He is a caring father, a hardworking actor and, above all, an honest, decent man.”

The “house of horrors” line is also inaccurate, according to Fields.

“It is a gracious and loving family home,” he wrote.

The National Enquirer’s story claims that 6-year-old Suri, the daughter of Cruise and Holmes, was forced to live in a “tiny, windowless room” for five months in their Telluride, Colo., home.

The story also mentions that Holmes was subjected to verbal abuse and emotional punishment, while household staff kept tabs on her and reported her actions to David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Cruise, 50, is a prominent member of the church, and his religion reportedly played a part in the divorce-settlement talks with Holmes, 33.

Fields says none of that is true, and wrote that “these disgusting lies about Mr. Cruise will be there for all time, to be read by his children and, someday, his grandchildren.”

A representative for American Media could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.

The couple’s divorce settlement was announced Monday, two weeks after news broke that the “Dawson’s Creek” actress wanted to end her five-year marriage with the Hollywood star.

Holmes got primary physical custody of their daughter, although Cruise is supposed to have generous visitation rights, according to reports.
