Priyanka Chopra is already an award-winning actress in India, but now this Bollywood beauty is ready to conquer the American music charts.
And she’s off to a pretty solid start.
Chopra, 30, is currently the face of the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football.” Every week, football fans are treated to a sneak peek of her debut single, “In My City,” featuring the former Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am, as the song is currently the primetime programme’s official kick-off track.
With her debut album on the way, you’re going to want to keep your eyes on this pop star.
Here are five essential things to know about Chopra.
1. Before starting her acting career, Chopra won the Miss India and Miss World titles in 2000.
When Chopra was in high school, she won the local ”May Queen” pageant, which then qualified her for Miss India. However, it was her mother who secretly submitted her daughter’s photos for contention. She went on to win Miss India and then was crowned Miss World in 2000. With the coveted Miss India and Miss World titles under her belt, it’s no wonder she became one of the hottest stars in India.
2. She’s one of the most famous Bollywood actresses in India.
After travelling for a year as Miss India, Chopra set her sights on Bollywood. She made her acting debut in the 2002 film Thamizhan — and her Bollywood debut in 2003′s The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. However, it was 2008′s Fashion that turned her into a bonafide Bollywood star. The Madhur Bhandarkar film was a critical success, and her critically acclaimed performance earned her several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actress, as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
3. Chopra is also a writer. She had her own celeb and the city column.
The busy actress started writing a celeb and the city column, titled “The Priyanka Chopra Column,” for the Hindustan Times in 2009. “I’m a private person and never thought that I could express my feelings,” she said at the time. “But strangely enough, whenever I sat down to write this column, my inner most thoughts came to the fore.” Despite ending her column a year later, Chopra writes sporadically for several Indian outlets.
Her most recent column was titled, “No Woman in Mumbai Feels Safe Any Longer”, published by Times of India in August 2012.
4. She’s the face of the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football.”
In 2011, Chopra signed a record deal in the U.S., and her debut single, “In My City,” premiered Sept. 13 on the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football” kick-off game. The track also features hitmaker Will.i.am. When she’s not busy finishing up her debut album, Chopra is currently the face of the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football.”
5. Even Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a fan!
Looper star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a big fan of Chopra’s new single. ”I came across Priyanka’s new track and found the song very upbeat and refreshing. She is beautiful and extremely talented. The song is going on my iPod list,” he said .
