The Madurai bench of the Madras high court has ordered issue of notice to actors Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bchief N Srinivasan and organisers of the Indian Premier League (IPL), for their alleged 'indecent' dance performances during the inauguration of the IPL V in Chennai this year.

In his petition, K Jebakumar, an advocate said that the inaugural event of the IPL, which was held at the YMCA grounds in Chennai on April 3, saw the actors performing indecent dance programmes, which were 'uncensored and indecent', and embarrassed the women and children in attendance, including those who watched the show live on television.

Among the 12 persons mentioned in the petition are Bollywood stars, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, American pop star Katy Perry, Australian cricketer Douglas Bollinger and officials of the Sony Set Max television, which telecast the event.

The petitioner sought a direction to the state director general of police to register a case on the basis of his complaint and take further action in accordance with the law.

He claimed the inaugural programme was telecast live uncensored by Sony Set Max TV for BCCI and IPL. Photographs and video clippings of the show were published/ telecast by newspapers and TV channels causing distraction to students who were writing their examinations during that time, he contended.

The actors, cricketers and officials of the various organisations could be charged under various sections of the IPC, including Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, Young Persons Harmful Publications Act and Foreigners Act, he said.

Counsel for the petitioner, Peter Ramesh Kumar said that complaints in this regard lodged with the IGPs of the Central and south zone had not been heeded.

Justice A Selvam before whom the petition came up for hearing asked "Why this inaction? (on the complaint filed by the petitioner)," and ordered issue of notice to all those concerned and posted the case to July 31.
