Zooey Deschanel will play Loretta Lynn in a Broadway-aimed legit adaptation of "Coal Miner's Daughter."
Deschanel toplines a musical that, like the 1980 film that starred Sissy Spacek, recounts Lynn's trajectory from Kentucky poverty to country music star, with tunes to be drawn from the singer's catalog. Other members of the show's creative team remain to be set.
Stage version will be produced by Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson) -- also the producer of the tuner version of "Bring It On" that's now on a North American tour -- and Scott Sanders Prods., which last month opened the Broadway revival of "Evita" toplined by Ricky Martin.
Deschanel, the star of successful FOX skein "The New Girl," also is one half of the band She and Him, which recently released the album "She and Him: Volume 2."
The "Coal Miner's Daughter" casting was announced from the stage of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry May 10, with both Lynn and Deschanel present. The event recalled the 1979 perf at which Lynn brought Spacek up onstage to announce that Spacek would portray her in the film version of her bio.
The musical's production timeline hasn't yet been set, although the final sked is not expected to conflict with Deschanel's involvement in "The New Girl."
