Asha Bhosle's daughter Varsha has reportedly committed suicide.
The daughter of the veteran Bollywood playback singer, who was suffering from depression, is said to have shot herself in the head at mid-day today, PTI reports.
The 56-year-old singer, journalist and writer was alone at her residence in South Mumbai at the time of the incident. Her body was discovered by her driver who found her lying in a pool of blood on the sofa.
Her body was transported to hospital, where she was declared dead. Police are currently trying to find out to whom the revolver is registered. She did not leave a suicide note.
Varsha, who is the second of Asha Bhosle's three children with first husband Ganpatrao Bhosle, was taking medication for depression and had reportedly tried to end her life twice in the past by taking an overdose of sleeping pills.
A source close to the family said that Asha Bhosle, who was in Singapore, has taken a flight back to India.
Speaking on Twitter, playback singer Sonu Nigam led the tributes to Varsha saying: " Varshaji appeard 2 b a very strng woman. But only God knows what actually goes inside every human being. May her soul rest in peace..
"Heart goes out to Bhonsles and Mangeshkars.. Only they know their pain."
Varsha, who was a columnist for a weekly papaer, had also worked as a playback singer for several Bollywood films and performed in concert with her mother.
