How were you as a kid? Impossible, incorrigible a brat of demanding proportions BUT KIND
How do you keep fit? As much as I breathe I am relentless in high performance fitness as I test every session before I impose it on the national squad
What’s the best part of being the rugby selection chief ? Stepped away as chairman after three good years and now I have a bigger responsibilityas national coach of SL Women’s 7 Rugby which is now the fastest growing sport in the world and an Olympic discipline in 2016
Tell me about cricket at the time you were playing? We had every format except for T20 and I enjoyed playing at the highest level except for my country
Did you ever regret not being selected to the national team? I was studying in England from School to University and playing a full time sport. But no regrets, I certainly enjoyed playing first-class cricket and had a good laugh
What do you think about the Buzz with Danu? In the context of Sri Lanka’s current progress and fast growing urban/metro status it’s good to have the freedom to express the story of life in the city, stories about us, a unique blend of islanders and madness
What would you say is your biggest challenge in your job? My jobs are many, being a father and a husband plus a National Coach. It challenges me on almost every level possible but that is also the enjoyment.
Do you believe in keeping in touch with friends? How good are you? YES! VERY GOOD and very bad, it’s a simple case of extremes but thankfully tolerated
Tell me a little bit about your family members? I have several and they are all COMPULSIVE, IMPOSSIBLE, IMPECABLE it also adds to the glorious uncertainties of life. Between the kids the Mrs. and my mother’s lot each day presents itself as brand new start, I always say OHAANA first and OHAANA ALWAYS
What are your nicknames? Shark, Shano, Thunder Thighs, The Native Islander, Kalu Kolla and I was fondly known as “THE FLU”

Your most memorable moments in rugby? Getting picked to play for Sri Lanka as a youngster and then winning at the HK 7’s in 1984 (bowl champs) and then in 1994 as captain winning the 7’s trophy in Fiji
If...
If you could read the private diary of someone you know...
I would like to fix things for them so that they enjoy their lives and lose their sense of fear and celebrate their skills, fixing love might be a tough ask; everything else might be possible
If you woke up one day looking like former caption Arjuna Ranatunga, you will
Not go in to politics and hopefully help Sri Lanka’s cricketing destiny one more time sharing his vast archive of experience and knowledge – EASILY the most knowledgeable cricketer in the world today
If you had to choose the most valuable thing you ever learned what would it be?
Learning to listen and also learning patience - easily the most valuable things I’ve ever learned. As a youngster I was a combustible engine ready to explode, with time and experience and a little wisdom……….. BULA BULA
If you had to describe yourself as a flavour, what would it be?
Dark Chocolate - smooth, sharp, distinct and impossible to forget. Once you’ve gone dark…..

Your views on doping in sport?
Deadly, horrible, disgusting and should be banned for life
Your views on Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene deciding to retire from Twenty20 Internationals after the ongoing World T20 in Bangladesh.?
It’s a tough ask but given their amount of playing years it is always fair to expect good players to leave when they are at the top of their games. Retiring is always tough to accept for fans but these are great players with families who deserve to make their own decisions having dedicated so much for their country
Who in your opinion is the most famous Sri Lankan cricketer currently?
That would be a toss between Sanga and Malinga and Angelo Mathews comes very close as a new young skipper
Would you rather have a man’s top half and a woman’s bottom half or vice versa?
Man’s top half and a woman’s bottom half definitely given the vast skills available
What is a better sport in your opinion - rugby or cricket?
Rugby! Both are fabulous but rugby is certainly the fastest growing sport in the world and Rugby 7’s easily grabs the spotlight and fires up the imagination. Cricket is limited though and not as popular as rugby around the world

Depends on where I am, it can be practical and confusing given the situations
Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of bees?
BEAR! A BIG BEAR! Then I know my opposition and I know what to expect, I can square off against the beast and take my chances
Do you always smile for pictures?
That would be a tough ask because I always tend to be thinking too much etc. and have to be reminded that a smile would be desirable.
